The restaurant was visited on Monday, 22nd May 2006 in the evening.
The food ordered was: chicken biryani, brinjal bhaji, chicken dhansak, pilau rice.
Quality of food
The food was as good as ever, despite a long break. This was an excellent rendition of some curry house staples.
Quality of service
My pal and I used to come here a lot (having followed the chef when he left the Shahee Mahal in Guildford) but have not been for some years; nonetheless, we were both recognised on our arrival and given a throughly warm welcome back.
Variety on menu
Not only is there an interesting selection of specials, we know from past experience that the staff are willing to talk helpfully about the food and to prepare some off-the-menu specials if there's something that you really want.
Decor & ambience
Lighter, cleaner and more airy than most - more of a restaurant than a bog-standard curry house.
Location
Top end of Guildford High St and bear right at the fork; opposite the old cinema that's now a block of flats.
Cost
Poppadoms, lager, two main courses, rice and a side dish for thirty five quid including a tip - thoroughly worth it for the quality of the food.
In summary
In our experience, by far the best curry in Guildford.
The restaurant was visited on Thursday, 16th Jan 2003 in the evening.
The food ordered was: Lamb Rogan, Chicken Balti, Chicken Korma.
Quality of food
The Korma was quite bland, the Rogan was average and the Balti was ok.
Quality of service
Not over friendly. Mumbled when talking to us.
Variety on menu
All the normal things, nothing that tempted me away from the usual Indian meals.
Decor & ambience
Looked like every other indian I have been to!
Location
The top end of guildford, past pizza express etc.
Cost
Four of us ate, all had drinks and it came to about £55.00, not bad.
In summary
We have been looking for a good quality indian for a while and I am affraid we are still looking after eating here.
The restaurant was visited on Thursday, 24th May 2001 in the evening.
The food ordered was: Spicy poppadums, Vegetable Pakora followed by Lamb Dhansak and Rogan Josh with pilau rice.
Quality of food
Thoroughly enjoyable food. Both the dhansak and rogan josh were sizeable and somehow much more tasty than your average restaurant. There was a discernable 'depth' to the flavour and a decent amount of heat, particularly in the dhansak.
Quality of service
I've always had a very friendly welcome at Maloncho, the staff (particularly the boss) always seem genuinely pleased to see you. Service was efficient with just the right amount of time between courses.
Variety on menu
All the restaurant standards you would expect, with a few Maloncho specials which are worth a go (hot, sweet with complex flavours).
Decor & ambience
Faily standard decor but tastefully done. The atmosphere is always friendly welcoming.
Location
At the top end of the High Street (on the way home for me), just far enough away to keep out the beered-up crowds.
Cost
Standard prices for Guildford; probably not the cheapest but good value.
In summary
I only ever go to one Indian restaurant in Guildford and this is it. Consistently tasty food and a genuinely friendly welcome says it all really.
